Default [Email] I can't send email, but I can receive it

Problem: I can't send email. I can still receive email. I have not changed any settings in Outlook etc. I have recently changed my ISP, or, I have not changed my ISP at all.

This sometimes happens when you have changed your ISP to an ISP who blocks port 25 which is the standard SMTP port for most hosts. This can also happen when your ISP suddenly decides to block port 25.

    OPTION #1
Try changing your outgoing mail server to the one that your ISP has provided you for SMTP.

Meaning use the POP we provide and SMTP they provide and everything should work fine. This is because some ISP's like Earthlink, SBC and AOL block port 25, which is the port most hosts use for SMTP. You will still be able to send mail normally from example@yourdomain.com.

As of this posting date many people are writing in saying that they have not changed their ISP or any other settings, but it just started happening. More and more ISP's are blocking this port so please try this method before contacting support.

For a visual tutorial on how to change this setting, see THIS LINK, select Email from the list on the left, and watch the demo for your email software to locate this setting. Make sure you replace the SMTP (outgoing mail server) from mail.yourdomain.com to mail.yourisp.com, smtp.yourisp.com (or whatever it is they provide you) If you are not sure of their SMTP server you will need to contact your ISP's support dept. and ask them for the name or IP address of their SMTP outgoing mail server so that you can set it up in your email program like outlook express.

    OPTION #2
We have also enabled port 26 for SMTP. What this means is that you should be able to continue using mail.yourdomain.com for your SMTP setting, however, you need to change the default port from port 25 to port 26. Often times this setup is more convenient, especially for laptop users who travel a lot. It means you will not have to change your SMTP every time you you travel and use another ISP.

    Default Option #2 Question

I thought this might fix another problem I am having and changed my port to 26. When I do this I get the following error:

Task 'david@ideadirect.com - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Is there anything else I need to do other than change the port to 26?

Make sure you are using mail.yourdomain.com (replace "yourdomain.com" with your actual domain) and it should work fine. That error sounds like it is mistyped or you are not using the correct SMTP.

    Default Hmmm... smtp spelled correctly

The SMTP is definitely spelled correctly. POP3 and SMTP are both mail.ideadirect.com
Authentication is turned on to use same as incoming.
Email works fine on port 25.

I was having another issue related to an IP listed by spamhaus causing bounced email. I thought maybe a different port 'might' route through a different IP (highly unlikely but worth trying). I'm also getting an email account with my ISP which might get me a new IP but I travel and didn't want to use the ISP authentication/smtp info.

Anyway, as I wrote this, the bad IP was cleared from spamhaus so it is not an issue anymore. It is handy though as a few of my clients have had their ISP block port 25.

Although this post started in 2005 I see by the amount of views that this is a common problem. I have tried everything you mentioned above including checking and rechecking my port and I am still having an issue. This is not a lap top that I move around it's a desk machine in my home office and this just started, the email was fine and now it's not. Are there any other suggestions that I can try?

Who is your ISP? Sometimes you can contact them directly and find out if they are blocking particular ports and work around the issue.

Also, try rebooting your computer. I have a client that periodically has this issue with Outlook and a reboot fixes the problem every time.
    Thank you,

Problem started last night after midnight. Have had this account and ISP for years. Nothing new changed. Used our home ISP to send emails when I encountered problems. Came into the office this morning and everyone is having the same problem. Everyone is getting the message box Enter Network Password and when they click OK, it just keeps popping up again. I changed the port to 26 with no success. Please help.
