What happened with Missy today?
It has some load issues. We are tracking down the loader.
I have a script upgrade to run on a client site... should I wait for the "all clear"?
Yes, wait a bit.
Everything is back to normal. Had to monitor it for a while to make sure that the problem was resolved.
Okay - thanks Alexander
Having issues with Missy again. What's going on?
Too many connections to webserver. Had to restart it. Everything looks cool now, but I'm still keeping an eye on it.
Alex - what is causing the load problems.. is any of my clients' site causing the delay? I'm barely hanging on to one client since the GNAX outage and the delays lately are impacting my web maintenance services.
I've not had any problems since I started hosting with GH til the last month - do we have a new client on the Missy server that is effecting everyone else on it?
More of the same, everyone is waking up I guess and connecting to the server to check their email and web sites. Lots of connections. I have restarted web and email servers.
Really, there are a couple of resellers on here that could stand to move to a dedicated server.
Also this server could probably use a bit more RAM. I will see about scheduling an installation of more RAM but it would be nice if a couple of the resellers on here moved on to to a dedicated.
I don't think I have met the threshold for a dedicated (75 -100 accounts); do you contact clients about moving to a dedicated when they are using so much of the load?
I just seriously need to get in and unsuspend 2 accounts!
Well, it should be working for you already after I restarted the services. 75-100 accounts would be hindsight in my opinion for looking into a dedicated.
25-50 would be foresight.
Do we ask them to upgrade, sometimes especially if the majority of their sites are causing the problem. But usually no. It just seems to be a combination of everyone on Missy in this case.
We will put a gig or 2 of RAM in there tonight and see if life gets better.
I am also installing a new mail server on here which should help lower the loads overall. Lets see what happens.
Thanks for your dedication to this Matt... Is there a way to move to a dedicated without my clients losing all of their emails/contacts, etc.? I still fall short by just a few and only made a marginal profit last year.
Maybe I need to rethink my position as a hosting reseller. The tech support and customer service is pretty time intensive when we have issues.
I guess we'll see how it goes and I'll keep an eye on my financials this year to see if it would be better to not offer hosting for new clients.
I have 62 e-mails coming through - looks like ones I've already received. Yay, I should be getting phone calls any minute now. :)
Well, 2 ways you can look at that. Most web designers can get away charging in excess of $25 per month I have seen over $100 a month and with this fee some set number of web design hours are bundled into the price. You don't generally need to compete with trying to sell web hosting to random clients off the Internet as I guess most web designers obtain their business locally.
So maybe the answer for you is to raises price and bundle services. Then if you want to sell hosting to the public at large, open a second brand of hosting only that is not associated in any way with your design site.
A dedicated server will allow you to offer more competitive packages inline with the rest of the hosting companies that do not bundle services like design. So you will have the best of both worlds.
Regarding support, you might consider some 3rd party support to run your helpdesk. You can get tickets answered for $2.00 $3.00 a ticket. The support isn't that great and not as tightly integrated as you might want, but that is how most hosts do it during their preliminary growth phase. Lets say you get 10 tickets during a time of "crisis" well you are looking at 30 bucks no matter how many times your techs have to reply. It might get rid of some of your support headaches and allow you to spend more time growing both brands.
Hosting definitely is a 24 hour business. It takes a lot of work but the payoff end the end is a good one if you can stick with it and figure out the answers to the tough problems we have all had to face.
On a side note, if someday you decide its not for you, then let us know and we can help you to transition your clients into our service if you like.
Will they lose everything as far as the emails are concerned that are on the current server?
No, nothing is lost during the transfer. They might have a couple emails delivered to the old server during transition but usually not and if they do they can always check the webmail interface on the old server to be sure.
Oh okay - that's awesome to know. I'll let you know what I decide to do.
Thanks again Matt!
Hey Matt -
Did you get the RAM put in the Missy server? Things have been great until today - we are back to having delays and unable to connect to the database problems.
Missy won't take any more RAM.
We have suggested to a couple of the larger resellers to move to dedicated but no takers yet. Next step is to see if anyone wants to move to dedicated or to another shared server. We've have tuned this machine all that we can and i don't anticipate the load issues that we some mornings to go away until some people start to move to other servers.
Any downtime involved with moving to a shared server with more room? What about the spam assassin/forwarders, etc. on the email accounts and finally, I had some configurations changed here and there on missy that I would need duplicated, is that possible?
Same questions to a move to dedicated.
Also - what is my reseller account using per month in transfer? And do you have to buy the dedicated server and pay the monthly hosting fee?
There should not be any downtime in either case. All the email and email settings would be migrated. If you remember what changes that you had done on Missy then we can dupe those on whatever server you move to. Its helpful if you know what they are. If you don't remember, then we can figure it out from the errors that will appear on the sites after they are migrated.
Last month you did about 160 GB of transfer and this month will be a little bit less by the time the month is over it looks like.
No, you don't need to buy the dedicated server, it is a flat fee every month on a lease basis. Free hardware replacement and everything else that you have now. It can be considered a big reseller account.
The one I see in the trouble tickets is: allow_url_include = On;
Can you look at the php settings on Missy to see if there was anything else?
I think some of the other stuff was in php.ini files which would transfer, right?
I have custom nameservers, SSLs and DedIP's on a few accounts.
Also, customized whm message and cpanel theme.
I can't access my cpanel info for the intel type Missy has...what is "KVM over IP" ?
My sister's reseller account would probably also be moved... can you have 2 resellers on the same ded server?
Sorry for all the questions...just trying to make an informed decision on which one to get.
Also...can I upgrade anytime?
Its hard to say from the main php.ini which settings are specific to you, but if there are php.ini files in any of your accounts, those settings would be copied in the transfer.
cPanel *should* transfer all of these settings during migration, if it forgets something which it does sometimes, we can easily grab them manually from the old server.
Missy is an older Intel Pentium 4. KVM over IP probably is best described here:
KVM switch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Not everyone needs it.
Sure, and you can have your own resellers if you want to start offering reseller packages to your clients or the general public.
No problems at all :)
okay - I want the Intel Package I - Is there any way I can get the billing date to be the same as my old one?
I know I'm being a pain in the rear but I bill everything to make sure I have my hosting fee saved for each month's payment.
Yes, you can have the same bill date.
2 ways to do that.
A) Order the new server on the same day you get the next invoice for the current reseller account
B) Order the new server whenever you want then ask us to pro-rate the days so that it falls on your desired renewal date.
The only problem with option B is that the renewal date at the datacenter is going to be different than your renewal date at GlowHost. Which means you might end up owing one more month at the end of your contract should you decide to cancel the server at some point.
Also instead of the Intel Package 1 I think I have something better here for the same price that has a backup drive already which is something you are going to want / need. It is a dual processor machine, the drives are a bit smaller but the same or better RAM and 2 processors should be a better performing machine unless you really need the extra disk space.
I don't want the same issues that Vern seems to have ... am I getting the right package?
How much smaller?Quote:

Can I keep my clientexec license which was free through my reseller account?
I subscribe to the outage thread and Vern seems to be mentioned often as you guys are usually upgrading, etc. I should have re-worded that post.
The only reason I am moving to a dedicated server is to not have the delays and downtime as I have a couple of pretty focused clients on my hosting. I am assuming this move will take care of the delays and load issues. Correct?
Vern is a different Animal. It is the primary node for all the VPS servers.
As for specs, I am digging them up for you now. There isn't a link to order, its a "special" so we will have to set it up for you manually.
Sounds good!
I want to give my client's a heads up so if you can let me know when the "manual" set-up to pay will be done I can schedule my e-blast.
Take your pick:
Dual Intel Xeon
Primary Drive: 120 GB
Backup Drive: 250 GB
RAM: 2 GB
$199/mo
Dual AMD Opteron
Primary Drive: 120 GB
Backup Drive: 120 GB
RAM: 4 GB
$199/mo
This includes cPanel and management.
Sorry, the second one was an AMD Opteron not Intel Xeon. I have edited the post above.
How often will you schedule the backups?Quote:

They are about the same I guess processor-wise. Its a matter of personal preference. If it were me I would get the one with the extra RAM.
That's what I was thinking too. Okay, so same choice.
