Hosting Change

Good Morning All!

A quick question, (I hope). A small business is changing from their current hosting provider to Glowhost. I have already moved a copy the their current web site to Glowhost and everything looks to have moved intact; I've recreated all the necessary email accounts, with the thought of causing them minimal disruption as they use email heavily for their business.

They will be changing their DNS settings very soon to complete the move. I was asked a question regarding email that I wasn't sure of so I'll ask it here: what happens to any email sent to them during the time they point their name servers from their current host to Gloshost, before every thing resolves?

the most probable thing is that e-mails will arrive to the old server. Your client should use the IP of this server as a POP3 mail server to check e-mails there.

Or if your user does not have the technical knowledge of how to do that, if they have a webmail interface they can look at webmail on the old server and new server during the transition to make sure no emails are overlooked / lost.

Thank you for the information Matt, (got your name right this time!). They are on a very basic plan with their current hosting company; didn't even have access to any type of control panel to manage their account.

I'm not sure, but I'll ask if they have access to webmail.

No web mail access, unbelievable! There current email is a business account so the email domain is the same as what they will have once the move to Glowhost is complete. I'm thinking of temporally taking their site down and putting up a notice of some kind alerting users that the domain will be down for system changes while the Nameservers propagate from the current host to here. This way they won't miss any email orders.

I'll keep you informed.

A better solution would be to create 2 profiles in their email reader for the same address, then use the mail server IP address for the old host in the incoming and outgoing server definitions and then in the second profile do the same thing with the IP address that you receive here that way the email program is hard coded to check the exact IP for mail on both hosts.

once propagation is complete they an delete the profile for their old host and update the new profile to use mail.domain.com instead of the Ip for incoming and outgoing mailservers.

This allows you to check email on both hosts during propagation. A little more advanced but it works well. You'll have to ask the other host what the IP is or ping the domain that you have listed in there now and then when the ping returns an IP plugging in the IP instead of the domain should work fine for you.

Sometimes when a server is rebooted, it goes into fsck which is a disk check to make sure there are no bad sectors on the disk. This can take a while, and is unpredictable as to which reboot may trigger the fsck.

I changed the DNS name server settings with Network Solutions to point to GlowHost yesterday afternoon and the root domain has already resolved. The hosting plan purchased by this business allows for 5 addon domains. I got into the control panel and tried to setup one of their other domains as an addon domain and couldn't do it. After entering all the information and clicking the Add Domain button, nothing happens. Is this something that requires a support ticket?

PS Let me know if you want to hear a real horror story (after all it is almost Halloween) about a hosting company (no names, I don't want to get sued) that really hates to loose business! If your interested I'll start a new thread in the Lounge.

The addon domain creations process looked like nothing was happining, but after letting it sit for awhile, it came back with an error message stating the addon domain was already created. But the addon domains section of control panel is still displaying the No Addon Domains are configured message. Any ideas?:confused:

I've never seen it where "nothing happens." is should create it or throw a specific error.

Do you receive a specific error after you try to create the addon domains?

As for the Halloween Horror story, sure enlighten me I'm always up for a good story. :)

I tried it again and did receive an error that says the addon domain is already configured, I'm attaching a screen print for you to see. But it still shows no addon domain, again another screen print showing this.

Do you have a dedicated or VPS or are you on shared hosting? Are you sure when you look at the list of addon domains its not listed there?

Using the Advanced 3 Star shared hosting plan. I double checked and there are no addon domains or subdoamins showing in the control panel. I did a little investigating and checked the original Zip file the old host gave me to upload that contained the site. There are two folders with the .com extension that are the domain names I wanted to create as addon domains. Could this be the problem? the system is already seeing domain1.com and domain2.com as folders in the root?

Perhaps, but the real problem is likely whatever the original error was the first time it failed. Sounds like it created a partial addon domain but its hard to say without the original error.

If you cannot remove the addon domain you'll need to open a support ticket on it.

I did find a folder that must have been created when I first tried to setup an addon domain. I have original web site zip file given to me by the previous host saved locally, so I unzipped the entire site on PC, compared the directory structure, found the extra folders and deleted them. I didn't notice before, but it must have been there previously, in the addon domain section I see the domain name I tried to add in the drop down box even though the folder structure no longer exists. I logged off and back in thinking that was the problem, but the domain name is still in the addon drop down box. Support ticket?

So delete it from the and see what happens...the folders are not what cPanel uses to determine if an addon exists or not. Once it is deleted you should be able to add it, else you will get an error that will tell you what you need to do.

Ok, I'll do as suggested. If this still doesn't work, any suggestions as how to get this businesses on-line store up using the registered rosarytwine.com domain as quickly as possible?

As an aside, everything seems to be working OK if I go through the main site here FNT Industries, Inc. Netmaker to the world of Fishing and Sports enter the site and select the bottom link which is to their on-line store. They have a third domain not working, seakingultra.com but right now the e-commerse site is the priority.

If I manually type the full URL to the e-commerce site in a browser I can get there also. Previously, if I only typed the URL to their on-line store which is rosarytwine.com I would end up here, FNT Industries Inc. Craft and Rosary Twine, but now all I see is this Apache message, cPanel®.

I'm now taking a good look at the structure of this site, and I can say with out a doubt, I should have done this first! :cry: I will definitely need some guidance if not outright help. How it got to this point is beyond me. I called the site owner a little bit ago and was informed that more than a few people were involved in writing and rewriting, uploading and downloading via ftp. I looks like whoever was ftping uploaded to the wrong folders, then uploaded to the correct folders more than once. This site is a monster. Folders and files are duplicated everywhere! How everything worked with the former host is beyond me. This is part of the horror story I mentioned, the old host won't disclose any information as to the previous setup. Just sent me the site in a zip file and that, that.

As this is looking more and more like a total redesign to straighten out, further discussions will be posted in the web design boards. As I said, I will need (plead) for help in straighting this out.

The addon thing should work for you if you pay attention to the on-screen errors. Not sure about the cPanel page, probably need a ticket on that.

This time around I renamed the rosarytwine.com folder first thinking this was the problem, the folder already existed, then tried to the addon domain again and got the same error message as before, "problem creating the addon domain; error from park wrapper: rosarytwine.com already configured". At this point I'm opening up a support ticket.

Sergey's the man! He solved the addon domain issue and I can now see it. But when I typed the rosarytwine.com URL I still couldn't get to the web site. I called the site owner and had them open the office on a Saturday afternoon, (at first they didn't want to but I explained their store was down), and went through some old notes from previous site maintainers and found a reference saying the site was using a redirect from the fnt-victory.com site. Since Sergey fixed the addon problem I tried a redirect from the addon domain to the proper page and the on-line store is now up and looking as it should. As I mentioned before, the layout of this site is a mess. Bottom line, the rosarytwine.com store is back up and running. Thanks to a top notch support staff. :thumbsup2:
