Where do you see those docs and what is xampp?
different stuff i have been finding on joomla, i think xampp is to put it on this computer however joomla says to download to the server but i am not sure where on the server. do i go thru cpanel on the domain i plan on making the site with or what. or better yet what do you recomend i get to build web site that is made for the simpleton.
You could always just use Fantastico in your control panel to install it for you. For the simpleton? I guess Joomla seems to be pretty popular and flexible.
thanks matt
You don't need XAMPPto install Joomla on Linux servers. It's for Windows-based servers only.
thanks omar. i am still trying to figure all this stuff out
Like Matt said, the easiest way is to do it through Fantastico in cPanel. Few clicks of the mouse and you're done.
Then look at the various templates available for Joomla (free and commercial) and customize your site. Google Joomla templates and you'll get tons of them. Joomla! is a good place to start learning.
awesome thank you! where in my cpanel do i find fantastico. i keep looking and dont see it anywhere. i have cpanel 11. and also do i install it on each domain i plan on using it. you dont know how much i apreciate your help.
Fantastico is the blue smiley-face icon in the Software/Services tab.
Yes, you will need an instance on each domain.
i dont have it thier so i quess i should let them know. thanks again i will let you know how it turns out
If you do not have the Fantastico icon in your cPanel you will need to open a ticket with tech support to get it licensed for your dedicated server. It does not come by default, but we will license it for free for you on demand.
i did matt. thanks he said they will work on it for me. as always u all are the best
what a nice program. quick question and i am sure their will be more. when doing the initial instalation in admin access area (this is in fantastico) it asks for admin user name and also password. are these new ones i use or the ones used for my server?
They are the same as your cpanel logins
thank you kind sir. i live in the virgin islands been to the college and everywhere else to get a teacher and none to be found so trying to learn it all myself.
No problem, still learn something new everyday myself!
man that was to easy. now a quick question. when i type in the url of my site which is uwroteit.net it takes you to joomla's home page. is that the way it works till i get a web page made?
ok thanks i will try to figure it out. i think i am in over my head to be honest with you
It works exactly the same way as your forums. You have the frontend and you have the admin area. The admin of your forum is where you adjust the vBulletin settings and the admin area in Joomla is where you adjust the settings of Joomla.
Try their forums or help site:
Joomla! Help Site
thanks matt. i feel like an idiot. i imagine the rest is as easy as the install and i spent the last week trying to figure the install out and it was just a click of a button with the program you all installed for me
The Joomla admin username and password are completely separate from your cPanel username and password. In fact, you should make them different for security purposes.
Coming soon page: in the admin, go to Site > Global Configuration and you'll see the Site offline selector and the offline message.
cool thank you. i am getting thier slowly. i wish you could just bring up the main page in html. it would be a whole lot easier to do what needs to be done
